Asom Forest Service (AFS) examination

JORHAT, Sept 2: The Asom Forest Service (AFS) examination in Asom has not been held for the last 21 years in Asom. The examination conducted by Assam Public Service Commission (APSC) was held in the state in 1988 for the last time. The existing Governments of the State do not arrange this examination due to some unknown reasons. As a result, it seems that, there would be no Asomiya top officials in Asom’s Forest Department in the next ten years or so. There is only ten per cent such officials currently working in the said posts, a high official of the Asom Forest Department said.

Noteworthy that, the AFS examination is a combined competitive selection process as well as the ACSs, as a direct recruitment to the high level posts of the Forest Department of Asom. The candidates who pass the AFS are directly recruited to District Forest Officer (DFO) or Assistant Conservator of Forest (ACF) in any district of the State. Therefore, due to lack of the examination, its having an effect on the recruitment of the new talents as well as bares the way to get hold the top posts of the department by any Asomiya officials.

Apart from this, promotion, the other process of recruitment of the top posts bear out that, the lower grade officials can be promoted no more than Range officer or such other equivalent posts. Therefore, due to not holding the AFS examination and the recruitment of higher officials from the other States of the country to the Forest Department prevent the Asomiya talents to get hold the said posts and it turns to a serious cause of concern that, in any moment the number of Asomiya higher officers in Forest Department turns in to zero soon.

However, the Forest Department sources informed that, the All Asom Forest Rangers’ Association had filed a case in the High Court seeking the justice that– ‘No fresh AFS candidates should be appointed without providing the service rule for the said officials in 1988’. It may be an obstacle to hold the examination for this long period of time, sources added. THE SENTINEL
