The Indian Premier League (also known as IPL) is a Twenty20 competition of cricket organized by Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). It’s Chairman and Commissioner is BCCI’s Vice President Lalit Modi.

First Season

The tournament was begun on 18th April 2008 in Bangalore. 59 matches were to be played in 46 days in which 58 matches were played and 1 was washed out because of rain. Each team played with others with round robin system. The top 4 sides reached the semi-finals. In the final, Rajasthan Royals beat Chennai Super Kings and become the first IPL champions.

Second Season

The second season in 2009 happened together with general elections in India. So because of the security reasons of players, the venue of IPL was moved to South Africa. The tournament format remained the same as. This time it was Deccan Chargers who become winners.

Third Season

The third season released in January 2010 with players’ auction. 66 players were to be sold but only 11 players were sold. No Pakistani player was bought by any of the franchises which resulted into a political issue. Five new venues including Ahmedabad, Cuttack, Vishakhapatnam and Nagpur have been added. Other changes consist of elimination of icon players and permission granted to the players who were part of the Indian Cricket League (ICL) to play this tournament.

Sponsorships

DFL Group, India's largest property developer, paid US$50 million to bag the title sponsorship for 5 years from 2008 to 2013.
