Indian Administrative Service (IAS) Exam Pattern Question Papers

Age Eligibility: Candidates who wish to appear for the exam must be 21 years of age as on 1st August, 2010. Maximum age limit is 30 years for general candidates, 33 years for OBC candidates and 35 for ST/ST candidates. Ex-servicemen will get 5 more years exemption from the prescribed age limit The date of birth accepted by the Commission is that entered in the Matriculation or Secondary School Leaving Certificate or in a certificate recognized by an Indian University as equivalent to Matriculation or in an extract from a Register of Matriculates maintained by a University, which extract must be certified by the proper authority of the University or in the Higher Secondary or an equivalent examination certificate.

Number of Attempts: Only four(4) attempts are allowed for General Candidates, Seven(7) for OBC candidates and no limit for SC/ST candidates. When you appear for the Preliminary Exam or attempted only one paper is counted as an attempt.

Restrictions on applying: If you are appointed to the IAS or the IFS on the results of an earlier exam and continues to be a member of that service then in that case you will not be eligible to compete at this exam.

IAS Fee : Rs. 100/- and no fees is charged from SCs/STs/Physically disabled candidates

IAS Exam Pattern: The exam is conducted by the UPSC all over the country and comprises of two (2) stages:

1) Preliminary Examination (Popularly known as Prelims)
2) Main Examination (Popularly known as Mains)

Preliminary Examination is of objective type which is a qualifying exam for Main Examination. Main Examination consists of written examination and Interview. Generally Preliminary Examination (IAS Prelims) is held in the month of May/June and the

Main Examination (IAS Mains) in the month of October/November.

IAS Main Exam Written Test Pattern:

Paper-I : Candidates should select one of the 18 languages included in the VIIIth Schedule

to the Constitution. This paper is Qualifying Paper. The paper carry 300 Marks

Paper-II : English Paper, This paper is a Qualifying Paper which carry 300 Marks

Paper-III : Essay paper carry 200 Marks

Papers IV & V :    General Studies carry 300 Marks for each paper, so a total of 600 Marks

Papers VI, VII, VIII & IX  : You have to choose any two subjects from prescribed optional

subjects. Each paper carry 300 marks. So a total of 1200 marks.    

Total Marks for Written Examination is 2000 Marks

Interview Test     300 Marks

Grand Total = 2300 Marks

IAS Main Exam Interview:
At interview stage, two-fold vacancies are called to appear before the UPSC Board.

Interview carries 300 marks. Interview calls are sent on the basis of minimum marks fixed by the UPSC at its discretion. The overall ranking is done based on the Mains performance (i.e., 2000 marks) and interview. Therefore, the total marks involved in the ranking are 2300. Candidates are allotted various services keeping in view their ranks in the examination and preferences given by them in their main application form.

IAS Preliminary Examination Pattern:

The preliminary exam consists of two papers:

    1) Paper I - General Studies paper which carry 150 marks
    2) aper II - An Optional subject which carry 300 marks

About Union Public Service Commission (UPSC)


The UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) is a legitimate body in India allowed to take examinations to appoint people for different civil services. The Indian Constitution has given one centralized Public Service Commission for central government and at the state level, Public Service Commission for every state.

The members and the Chairman of the UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) are selected by the President of India. As a minimum 50 % members of the Commission are Civil Servants weather functioning or retired. They also should have minimum of 10 years experience either in State or Central service. Every member has a term of 6 years or till s/he reaches the age of 65 years, any is earlier. S/he can put forward his/her resignation to the President of India at any given time.

The main functions of the UPSC are given below:

•    Recruitment for services under the Union by conducting competitive examinations. This is the usual form of recruitment in which an examination is performed before an interview.

•    Recruitment to services for the Central Government by conducing direct selection. This recruitment is done to fill up irregular or immediate job vacancies. Generally it is done by direct interviews, though sometimes a written test is also conducted.

•    Recommendations on the correctness of officers for selection on promotion or transfer or deputation.

•    Recommendations to the Government regarding matters of Recruitment to different posts and services.

•    Penalizing cases involving different civil services

•    Various matters concerning for giving extra pensions or compensation of legal expenses etc

ABOUT GRADUATE APTITUDE TEST IN ENGINEERING (GATE)

         The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering or GATE test is an annual exam for admission in various engineering institutes such as IIT, NIIT, Indian Institute of Science (Bangalore) and various pharmacy institutes. GATE exam is conducted and administered by the Indian Institute of Science and seven other Institutes of Technology under the Government of India. The GATE exam provides admission into postgraduate programs. The GATE qualified students are eligible for admission into Master/Doctorate in Engineering or Medical Institutes. The eligibility for appearing GATE is good marks in Engineering/Medical degree or Master in Science. The students qualified in GATE can get admission in top engineering institutes like NII, IISC, IIT and other institutes. The top engineering institutes take students who score top in GATE examination. The syllabus is generally based on the candidates background in education i.e., upon the degree achieved.

            The GATE exam is conducted in main eight zones. They are IIT (Bangalore), IIT (Mumbai), IIT (Delhi), IIT (Guwahati), IIT (Kanpur), IIT (Kharagpur), IIT (Madras) and IIT (Roorkee). The overall administration of GATE lies in IIT, Guwahati. It is the organizing institute for GATE examination. The GATE exam can be conducted in two ways. They are Online examination and Offline examination. The online exam is where the candidate selects correct option out of four options displayed on the monitor through keyboard or mouse. The offline exam is where the candidate marks the correct answer in the given Optical Response Sheet or ORS sheet. The qualifying score for GATE is 2/3 and 9/10 for scheduled categories respectively.
