About Syndicate Bank

Syndicate Bank has a proud history which goes back even before India attained the freedom. The bank was first opened in 1925 in Udupi, a coastal town in Karnataka, India, in the name of Çanara Industrial and banking syndicate L’td. It was the dream child of three great visionaries – Sri Vaman Kudva, an engineer, Mr. Upendra Pai, businessman by profession and Dr. T M A Pai, a physician. Their main objective was to help the financial problems faced by the local weavers who had suffered heavily due to the unprecedented crisis in the handloom industry. The group started by collecting small amount from each member of the community. The initial collection was just 2 annas per day which was collected from the home of the members directly. It was started in the year 1928 under the Pigmy Deposit Scheme which has become brand equity of the bank even today. What started with just 2 annas, has grown up to huge collection of around Rs. 2 crore per day under the Pigmy Collection Scheme. With a pre-independence history, the bank has today built a strong customer base which has continued for generations. The bank has made its presence felt quite strongly in both the rural and urban areas equally. In rural area, the bank has worked out several schemes for the benefit of rural community and in urban areas, the bank has adopted a complete modern working atmosphere to suit the convenience of the urban population. Syndicate bank has brought in the modern way of banking like, ATMs & netbanking to its customers and has time and again kept the staff updated through regular training camps. The bank has started a new program titled Centralised Banking Solutions (CBS) which connect around 500 branches of the bank with the ATM facility will be connected all over the country. The name was changed from Çanara Industrial and Banking Syndicate Ltd’’ to ‘Syndicate Bank Limited’in 1963. The office was shifted from Udupi to Manipal.

With more than 80 years history, the ‘Syndicate Bank’ has carved a niche for itself in the hearts of customers.
