About UGC NET

The National Education Testing Bureau wing of the UGC (University Grants Commission) conducts the NET (National Eligibility test). This test is conducted to determine eligibility for lectureship and to award Junior Research Fellowship for Indian citizens. The NET also ensures that the minimum standards for the entrants in teaching profession and research are met from time to time. The test in conducted in Social Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Computer Science Applications, Humanities, Electronic Sciences and Forensic Science.

The CSIR (Council of Scientific and Industrial Research) conducts the UGC –CSIR NET. This test is conducted mainly for Science subjects, viz. Chemical Science, Physical Science, Planetary Science, Mathematical Science, etc. The UGC-NET tests are conducted twice a year, once in the month of June and once in the month of December. The exact test dates are published in a weekly journal which is circulated nationwide like Employment News during March and September. The results of the test conducted in June are disclosed on October while the results of December test are disclosed in April. The results are usually disclosed on UGC’s website. The results are also published in a weekly journal.

The candidates who qualify for the award of Junior Research Fellowship become eligible to pursue research in the subject of their post-graduation or in a related subject and are also eligible for Lectureship. The universities, institutions, IITs and other national organizations may select the JRF awardees for whole time research work in accordance with the procedure prescribed by them. The award of JRF depends on the performance of the candidate in all three papers of NET. However, the candidates qualifying exclusively for Lectureship are not considered for award of JRF. Candidates appearing in NET should clearly specify in their application form whether they are applying for both JRF & eligibility for Lectureship OR only for eligibility for Lectureship. Candidates who qualify the Test for eligibility for Lectureship are governed by the rules and regulations for recruitment of Lecturers of the concerned universities/colleges/state governments.
