 Indian Forest Service (IFS) Examination is conducted by UPSC. If you want to try for IFS Exam then you must study exam pattern and syllabus. IFS Exam is not easy and thousands of people try their luck.

 IFS Exam pattern:


 Exam consists of written test followed by Interview. Those who are selected in the written test will be called for Interview.

 Written test consists of total 1400 marks.

 Paper I: General English: 300 marks
 Paper II: General Knowledge: 300 marks

 Optional Papers:
 Paper III: 200 marks
 Paper IV: 200 marks
 Paper V: 200 marks
 Paper VI: 200 marks

 Total: 1400 marks
 

 Interview consists of 300 marks.

About Indian Forest Service (IFS)

Indian Forest Service is all about the forestry in India. It is about protection, conservation and regeneration of forest products. India is one of the first countries in the world which created a system to scientifically manage forests. The subject "Forestry" is managed by Government of India. Indian Forest Service is one of the three examinations conducted by the Government of India. Other two are Indian Police Services and Indian Administrative Services. Though, the candidates are recruited by the Government of India, they serve the state government or the Central Government.

Eligibilities :

Notification of IFS happens in the month of Feb/March every year and exam is conducted in the month of July.

There is an age limit of 30years as of 30July in the year of examination. There is a relaxation to the candidates falling in some categories as provided in the notification.

In terms of educational qualifications, candidate should be a graduate with one of the following subjects as the main subject - Botany, Zoology, Biology, Mathematics, Animal Husbandary and Veterinery Science, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, Statistics or Bachelors degree in Agriculture, Forestry or Engineering from some recognised University.

Selection procedure consists of two stages. Firstly, written exams which consist of essay type questions on General Knowledge, General English and 4 papers on any of the optional 14 subjects given in the list of their notification. Each paper is of three hours duration. Second stage consist of personal interview and personality test. Candidate is questioned on his/her academics, general affairs, wildlife, economic and cultural issues, forest related issues, policies and the status of its implementations, etc .

Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration at Mussourie - candidates are send here for foundation course. Indira Gandhi National Forest Academy at Dehradun - candidates are send here for wildlife training and other forest related practical trainings.

After finishing the trainings, candidates take on-the-job field training in the State where they are assigned. There is a probation period of four years after which they are promoted to the higher level.
