About United Bank of India

A brief history
This Bank was created in the year 1950 through an amalgamation process of four very old banks those were functioning in different parts of undivided India. Thus the origin of the bank might be considered as old as 1914-1915. At the starting, the bank had only 174 operative branches and a total business volume of Rs.259 crores. The Bank further merged another four banks at different times of which last one occurred in 1976. The most remarkable incident happened in the history of Indian banks in the year 1969. On the 19th. of July, 1969 the then Govt. of India nationalized 14 banks as their first step and this United Bank of India was one of the banks.

Branch Network of the Bank
Today this bank has grown to a worth mentioning size. It’s consisting of huge 1510 branches, spread all over the country. The Bank has a three-tier organizational structure. At the top the Head Office, which is located at Kolkata, West Bengal, then 29 Regional Offices and the 1510 branches are under the control of the regional Offices.

Business of the Bank
This public sector undertaking is a big business house of the country. It has reached every corner and up to the remote villages of different states of India. UBI is the lead bank of not less than four different states of India. West Bengal, Assam, Manipur and Tripura are the main leading states of business of the bank. UBI covers entire banking profile starting from consumer banking, corporate banking, investment banking, insurance, private equity, credit cards etc. In the year 2009, restructuring of the Bank was approved by the Govt. and the bank invested 2.50 billion rupees in shares.

Planning and expectations
The bank has the plan to reach the number one position the consumer banking in India. They feel they are for”U”.
