Its head office is currently situated at Kolkata and it has 28 regional head offices and 1439 branches spread all over India. It has its main market in eastern India. It shares its acronym (UBI) with Union bank of India, so many people gets confused between two banks. In March 2009, its board accepted government’s offer and according to this offer government will invest 2.50 billion rupees and almost doubles of it in next year.

United bank of India was formed by merging four eastern banks viz. Hooghly Bank, Comilla Union Bank, Bengal Central Bank and Comilla Banking Corporation. Later it acquired many banks. It was nationalized in July 1969, along with other 14 large banks. Particularly it stated its expansion after nationalization in urban as well as rural areas. To provide service to people living in mobile areas like Sunder ban, UBI has started a revolutionary service called mobile branches, which kept moving from place to place. It provides all normal banking services like all types of account, safety vault and ECS facility as well as also provides advance facilities like internet banking, core banking, online transfer of funds and many more.

It also has enabled itself with RTGS (Real Time Gross Settlement). It is a new technology, which enables users and banks to make transfer of funds in a flash and that too at very less cost. It also has implemented core banking solutions across all its branches to become first nationalized bank in east India to implement CBS. UBI is likely to declare its IPO at end of January 2010 or in mid of February 2010. In March 2009, Indian government has decided to reconstruct bank on the level of organization. This will improve banks performance and customer base even at greater level.
