Civil Services Exam 2010 Dates:

Notification Date: 2nd January 2010

Submission of Civil Services Exam forms from 2nd january 2010 and ends on 1st february 2010

Last date for submission of form for remote areas is on 8th february 2010

Prelims Exam on 23rd May, 2010

Mains Exam Likely by October 2010

Eligibility for Civil Services Examination:

Age as on 1st August, 2010

Minimum: 21 years -- Date of Birth not later than 1st August, 1989

Maximum: 30 years -- Date of Birth not earlier than 2nd August, 1980

Civil Services Exam Academic Qualification:

Must have completed a graduation degree from a recognised university. Final year students may also apply, provided they can provide the proof of obtaining the qualification while applying for Mains exam.

Civil Services Exam Maximum number of attempts:

Candidate can try for a maximum of four (4) attempts if he/she are in General category and 7 attempts if you belong to OBC category however there is no maximum attempt for SC/ST candidates.

About UPSC Civil Services Exam

      In India, Union Public Service Commission appoints officer through competitive examinations conducted in all over India. Those who want to opt for administrative jobs must pass through this test.  India civil service exam is considered to be one of the difficult, most rigorous and very competitive. These exams are based on exams taken by British government in India before independence.   It is said to be the very competitive because its success rate is 0.1% of total no. of applicants who opts for exams. This exam is generally a three phased system through which a candidate must pass viz.

1. A basic qualifying test is conducted once in every year.             
2. Main exam is conducted mostly in October or November.           
3. Those who pass main exam, has to undergo interview and depending upon their interview they get selected for service.

      Results of these exams are declared at the time of basic exam of next year. Those who want to serve in India Foreign Service or India administrative services, have to secure higher ranks (among first 50). We will see example of result of exam conducted in 2006. Total 400,000 applicants opted for exam for 500 vacancies in Indian government. Out of those 400,000, only 7500 applicants passed through the first phase and were eligible for main exam.

      The preliminary exam is conducted for total 24 subjects. Some of them are listed – Agriculture, Botany, Chemistry, Commerce, Law…..etc.

      After passing this exam candidate has to opt for some of these subject for main exam. Subject which are mandate for main exam are General studies, Essay, English qualifying, Indian language and some other subjects are Physics, Statistics, Zoology and languages like Oriya, Pali, Persian are optional. Basically a candidate has to give exam for nine papers. First paper contains Indian language in which a candidate can choose any Indian language out of 22 options. Second paper is English qualifying paper. Third paper is entirely based on Essays. Then two papers are conducted on general information. And rest remaining papers are optional i.e. a candidate has to choose two subjects (Two papers each).
