LIC Of India
The Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) came into existence on 1st September, 1956, when the Indian Parliament successfully passed the Life Insurance Corporation Act on 19th June 1956. The main aim was to create awareness about the life insurance in the whole of country with equal stress on rural and urban areas. There was a need for providing financial covering at a reasonable cost.  The concept was received with a slow acceptance in the beginning. But today Insurance has become part of every common man’s life. To start with, in 1956, LIC had a corporate office, 5 zonal offices, 33 divisional offices and 212 branch offices. As the market grew, LIC was re-organized and more branch offices were opened which also started to serve as accounting units. As the serving functions too got transferred to these branch offices, daily operations got more easy to perform. In 1957 the business was about 200.00 crores and by 1969-70 it hit the 1000 crores mark. But another 10 years were needed to get the next 1000 crores for LIC. With the re-grouping and re-organizing the revenue touched 7000 crores by 1985-86. All the branches are connected through the Metro Area Network.

LIC has started the online payment system through strategic tie-ups with some of the leading banks in India. The newly opened SATELLITE SAMPARK offices operate through digitalized record service and hence the time consumption has been reduced considerably.

LIC has managed to maintain its lead even with the entry of private insurance sectors. So far, reports indicate that more than one crore policies have been issued in a particular year itself. At present Mr. T.S.Vijayan is serving as the Chairman for Life Insurance Corporation of India. The credit of popularizing the concept of Insurance in India fully goes to LIC. With its continuous efforts, LIC has managed to imbibe the importance of insurance in the mind of a common man.
