About  Indian Air Force (IAF)
The Indian Air Force (IAF) is the air arm of the Indian defence system. Its foremost responsibility is to secure the Indian air space and do the aireal welfare during unforeseen situations. Officially it was established in October 8, 1932 as an ancillary air force to the British Empire in India. After the contribution in World War II it was the tag of Royal. So it came to known as RAF-Royal air force. Then after the India achieved independence from the colonial rule in 1947, the Royal Air Force started serving Independent India. The prefix, Royal, was also dropped as it was renamed as Indian Air Force (IAF)

The President of India is the supreme commander-in-chief of all the armed forces. So he serves as the supreme chief of the IAF. The chief of the air staff is Air Chief Marshall- ACM. He is a four star commander and commands the air force. Only one Air Chief Marshall can be active at a given instant of time. One officer is bestowed as Marshall of the IAF who is a five star rank and serves as the ceremonial chief.

There are five major wars with neighboring countries in which IAF has been involved after independence. One of them was with PRC-People’s Republic of China and other four with Pakistan. They were Operation Meghdoot, Operation Vijay and two more. Apart from these wars IAF has been actively involved in the peace keeping opretions with United Nations.

Indian Air Force is the world’s fourth largest air force after Russia, USA and China. With the working force of 170,000 and 1800 aircraft (approximately) are deployed in the services. IAF has undertaken some major expansions and upgradations in recent years. Majorly they include the replacing of the aging aircrafts. Various other expansions are under the MRCA  program in which India is going to buy 126 jets.
