About Staff Selection Commission
In 1967-68, a committee set up by Government of India proposed formation of a Service Selection Commission for conducting examinations to recruit people for lower category posts. So as per suggestions and as an interim measure, an examination committee was established and was added to Secretariat Training School and was renamed as the institute of Secretariat Training and Management. In 1975, Government of India created subordinate selection commission which was later in 1977 was re-designed as Staff Selection Commission.

Staff Selection Commission was initially formed for recruitment of some of the class III posts, its function was increased from time to time. It now makes recruitments for all group “B’ posts (Pay scale ranges from Rs.9300 to Rs.34800). The staff Selection Commission is headed by a chairmen who in turn is supported by two other members and a secretary or controller of examinations. These members are further supported by other officers and staff of headquarters and network of branches located at different places.

Staff Selection Commission has it’s headquarter located at New Delhi. All examinations and administrative matters or issues are submitted to the chairmen. Two members, under whom the secretary functions, submit these issues to chairmen. Besides these officers, many other posts are present like director, undersecretaries, deputy directors, finance and budget officers, section officers and bunch of supporting officers. For the sake of smoothness in control and convenience of candidates, it has large network of branches/regional offices. Regional director heads each regional office while deputy director looks over sub-regional offices.

The functions performed by commission are as follows: -

Recruitment for all group “B” posts.
Recruitment for all non-technical group “C” posts.
Conduction of examinations and interviews whenever required.
To conduct open competitive exam.
Conduction of periodical typewriting tests.
Any other function that are entrusted by Government of India.
